What Does it Mean to be a Christian?
I can best begin to explain what it means to be a Christian by recounting a dream I once had. I attended a church beset with numerous problems and infighting during this time. I often complained to other people about my parish, particularly how amateurish and irreverent I found the music.
But one night, I dreamed a strange dream. I was standing in the first pew, singing a hymn, along with the rest of the congregation. Instead of suffering through the music, I, and everyone else, was filled with incomparable, unbelievable joy.
What were we singing? Well, it was a song I had never heard or sung before in my waking life. The words were about Jesus spilling every single drop of His blood on the ground for us.
The contradiction in this dream remains with me to this day, the suffering that caused us so much joy. And that is the crux of what it means to be a Christian.
